After extensive prayer and exploration over the publication of my spiritual memoir, Delight in Disorder: Ministry, Madness, Mission, I am currently feeling led to explore self-publishing. I have visited the websites of four companies and spoken to representatives from two of them. Right now, “Lulu.com” seems to offer the best terms and service for me to accomplish the mission of bridging the distance between faith and mental illness.
The representative (Eric) from Lulu explained that for an investment of about $1,000, I would receive all the services necessary to make the book print-ready. Lulu could then print individual copies on demand for $5/each (on 80 lb. paper) – less if I ordered in bulk. Or, they would provide me the digital information (at no extra cost) and I could go to another printer. Tomorrow, I will be contacting printers within the tri-state area (Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky) to see who might offer the best service for the best price.
Once I have settled on a clear estimate for the cost of publishing, I plan to embark on a campaign to launch the book publicly by March, 2014. I have a dream of provided copies of Delight in Disorder to anyone who would benefit from my story, regardless of their ability to pay. I will be looking into the feasibility of distributing the book on request (or perhaps for a donation of any size).
Those of you who pray, I would appreciate your prayers as I continue to pursue publication, promotion, and distribution. If anyone out there has self-publishing experience with Lulu or other companies, I would appreciate you sharing your wisdom and insight. I hope to come to a publishing decision by the end of September.
If you feel led to support the mission of sharing the compassion of Christ with those of us who battle bipolar and other mental illnesses, stay tuned for updates. I hope to soon add a “newsletter” feature to this blog and my website. In the meantime, if you would like to receive regular e-mail news, joys and concerns, indicate so in the comments below.
